Whether you are an avid plant lover or want to brighten up your bathroom with some greenery, you will be glad to know that you have plenty of options. You just need to make sure that the type of plants you invest in for your bathroom should survive in low light. This is because many bathrooms usually have small windows. Some even have no windows at all, or have windows that are textured, tinted, or smoked for added privacy. Your plants also need to safely withstand humidity.
Spider Plant
Some varieties of spider plant, e.g. sagaa, are used as an edible vegetable. That’s not the kind of spider plant you should buy for your bathroom. Instead, it is recommended that you buy a more decorative type of spider plant that has variegated leaves. Direct sunlight can harm spider plants and scorch their leaves, so it would be a good idea to keep them in your bathroom where there is indirect light.
Orchid
Orchids add a layer of luxury to any bathroom. You can place them on the bathtub corner, next to the sink, or any other small space to add color and brightness. Keep them on a windowsill so they can get the needed indirect light. This will protect them from scorching while also making sure they are in a high humidity area that mimics their natural habitat. Orchids have blooming flowers, long stalks, and few leaves. If you don’t want to use soil, simply plant them in tree bark.
Bamboo
Bamboo is the ultimate tropical stereotype and it is suitable for any bathroom. Since it grows tall, you will need to make sure that it has lots of space so that it is kept in vertical placement. Some varieties, e.g. lucky bamboo, can be planted in a tall pitcher, vase, bottle, or trough filled with water and anchoring pebbles. Bamboo doesn’t require any soil so you won’t have to worry about any mess on your bathroom tile floors. Change the water twice a month and don’t forget to shape the plant to control its height.
Pothos
Commonly known as Money Plants, pothos come in many styles. It is a low maintenance plant ideal for any bathroom. In some homes, it can curve right around the room, following a stake, string, or waterproof wire. It works well in a hanging basket and thrives in high humidity and low light. You will need to regularly prune it though.
Tillandsia
Also known as air plant, Tillandsia has more than 730 varieties. Tillandsia is perfect for brightening up a bathroom as it is one of the easiest houseplants to keep as it receives all its water needs from the air. That said, you may need to mist the plant 2-3 times every week if it is set in a planter or not mounted. Alternatively, you can submerge the entire plant in the sink for a few minutes every couple of weeks, and place it in a sunny east, west, or south-facing window of your bathroom.
